Many people are wondering what happened in the Flight 447 plane crash. In fact, the possibility that the actual cause of the crash will be found is decreasing each day. However, as the pieces come together and more pieces of the puzzle are found, there are some definite theories on what may have happened to this Air France plane.

There have been questions about whether the Flight 447 plane crash happened because the plane actually exploded in midair, or whether the plane actually crashed into the ocean. The Brazilian Navy did find the jet's tail, which does make it a likely scenario that the jet did explode in midair. Experts state that the tail would probably not have remained in one piece if the plane had hit the body of water.

Storm winds were raging over the ocean when Flight 447 was in flight, and many question as to why the plane should have been allowed to fly into the storm to begin with. Just four minutes before the plane crashed, it was found that the autopilot was turned off. This gives credence to the possibility that pilots were trying to navigate the plane themselves through this violent storm.

Because the storm was so fierce and because the winds were so strong, it was very difficult to fly the plane through this type of weather. It's been theorized that the pilots were attempting to fly through the storm and made the mistake of overcompensating, thus simply tearing the plane's tail off.

The first plane pieces have been found since the crash, and 41 of the 228 people on board have been found in the Atlantic. Bits and pieces of the plane are being found, but the voice recorders or "black boxes" are still missing. They may contain the information needed to find the cause of the crash.

Investigators are also calling into question the maintenance and repairs done on the plane. The Pitot tube was supposed to be replaced entirely, but no one knows whether or not this was actually done or whether malfunction here caused the crash.

Many plane crash causes remain a mystery, even when those plane crashes have had video taken of them as they occurred. And of course, when the wreckage remains on the bottom of the ocean, the mystery deepens. Family and friends wonder if the truth of this crash's cause will ever be entirely understood or known.

A French nuclear submarine is aiding the search for the black boxes, along with other searchers. The floor of the ocean is very rough, which means the boxes may be very difficult to find. The sub is using sonar technology to try and located the boxes' acoustic beacons, which are only operational for about three weeks. The US is also assisting with this search and has supplied underwater audio devices, which may be able to hear the signals.

Many theories remain as to why Flight 447 crashed. Evidence has yet to fully show which theories as to its cause may be right. Investigators continue their quest to solve this mystery, and want to find out what happened to cause this catastrophe, a crash that cost so many people their lives.
